Alma Chilota is an excellent boutique hotel in Castro, with the bonus of giving guests the experience of staying in a palafito. The staff were very welcoming, and always ready to answer questions or help provide recommendations. The room was spotless, and the linens were fresh, and clean, and smelled amazing. The bathroom was a little bit tight for my tall husband, but it was also clean and the water was hot with great pressure. Breakfast offerings were fairly extensive for such a small hotel, and included meat, cheese, fresh fruit, yogurt, granola, bread & toast, sweet cakes, and eggs cooked to order. Coffee was always hot and ready to go around the clock, and hot water and hot milk were also available for tea drinkers. Watching the sea lions and dolphins play in the fjord was also amazing. Several excellent dinner locations are located just a few steps away along the same road.

I'd been to Castro several times, but this was my first during high season, and I'd advise travelers that unless you like sitting in backed-up traffic ('taco') for long stretches, just avoid Castro from mid-January to late February, when trying to drive from anywhere north of Castro to anywhere south of Castro can take hours. November-December are great, however, and I'm told March is the best month of all. By and large, Chiloé's charms are not to be found in the cities.

Castro is a really charming and very laid back place despite being the largest town on the island of Chiloe. It's a wonderful place to chill out, and there is some beautiful countryside in the vicinity. Next time when I go back, I'd like to rent a bike and explore the countryside more leisurely (this time I had a car).

I had long heard of how lovely Chiloe is and now I know why!
I had long heard of how lovely Chiloe is and now I know why! Castro was charming, a nice mix of history and local culture. The municipal museum was informative, the UNESCO heritage churches were really interesting, the palafitos--houses on stilts along the waterfront--were very colorful. The weather can be quite variable--I had two sunny, nice days and three rainy cold ones--so travelers need to bring a variety of clothing choices. Well worth a visit!

The famous church is way better looking on the inside.
The famous church is way better looking on the inside. Not much going on in the town itself, but a pleasant stop on the way, or base for other day trips. Highly recommend Nórdica Cafe for empanadas and sandwiches!
After a long day, it was very pleasant to be welcomed by such a friendly staff with such energy. The rooms were perfect for what we needed with super comfortable beds.
As every other review says, the breakfast is fantastic, the homemade bread and marmalade were delicious! With a superb view to enjoy it from.
To note:
There is a communal kitchen area for potential simple cooking and a terrace to enjoy the view.
Finally, I was able to do well-needed laundry in the evening and have it back early morning. Superb!
Nice, atmospheric and tranquil place in beautiful surroundings. Attention from hotel staff was generally excellent during our stay. The manager on duty exceeded her normal working hours to solve a wifi connectivity issue the night we arrived. Furthermore we were contacted about a left item after departure with an offer to ship it. All strongly appreciated. The food was generally good, however still with a potential to lift the overall experience to an even higher level.
The Lodge is in an incredible location. If you are a nature lover, this is the place for you! The lodge and park guides help to make the visit an adventure and a learning experience. Night hikes, boating to a remote hiking area, trails that are easily accessible were especially appreciated. The lodge is warm, comfortable, and welcoming. We would absolutely send friends and family to stay here. Not t be missed on a trip to Chiloe!
Spacious bedroom with warm, comfortable bed and furniture to unpack your stuff in. Lounge area where you can eat and watch TV. Digital channels available on the bedroom TV too. Small but functional kitchen that's well-stocked with cooking utensils and store cupboard essentials. Two blocks away from the bus terminal so useful for making day trips around the island.
Staff friendly, very clean and good breakfast, in addition front to the hostal one big supermarket .A little bit far from Castro center 27 minutes walking from bus station, but a lot public transport going over there, colectivos (Linea 8, 7, 6, 4, 77 etc just tell to them could you bring me to the supermarket superbodega Acuenta
This is a great location overlooking the bay and ecologically important mudflats. It is out of Castro far enough to be very quiet, but close enough to make for easy access to town. The house was very comfortable, while retaining a quirky charm. The birding was excellent with 200+ Hudsonian Godwits visible from the yard.
Our host Andres was friendly and eager to share his vast knowledge of Chiloé. Every place he recommended was as he predicted it — like having a personal travel planner! I cannot thank him enough. … The cabin is in a lovely setting on the water’s edge, far enough off the highway out of town to provide a restful sleep.
Everything was fine at Hotel Esmeralda : the location, the staff.
We were entitled a room with no view at all : it was such a wall behind the window ; I just asked if we could change room and they granted us another room viewing the street. This one was noisy but we preferred the have a view on something...
Stilt house apartment (studio), right on the water in the Gamboa are of Castro, Chiloé. Cozy, but with everything you need, as a couple or single traveller. watching the tide ebb and flow, the birds from the terrace. Great fridge, proper kitchen. Amazing location!!!
This hotel is something of a landmark, loved by architects for its striking design. The public areas are indeed impressive, with wonderful views over the bay (rain and mist permitting). Staff were friendly and helpful, and there is onsite parking.
the location. the view of Castro inlet. the spaciousness of the apartments. house on stilts leaning ove
the water. the kitchen was well equipped, the beds were comfortable and the staff very helpful.
This is such a beautiful place located in the most exquisite zone of Chiloé. The staff were all so very friendly and eager to share their best insider’s information on places to visit and to eat.
