I didn’t receive communication about the lockbox code, but after reaching out the host was extremely responsive and helpful, even meeting me at the property to ensure that I got in.

Take the fast ferry (4 hours) from Bergen and slow down and enjoy the glorious surroundings. Be prepared to relax and enjoy the quiet. We ate our meals and enjoyed cocktails at the Kviknes Hotel. We slept at the Balestrand Hotel and enjoyed the quiet.

Arriving by ferry drops you at the heart of the town.
Arriving by ferry drops you at the heart of the town. Walking south along Kong Beles Veg for about 2 kilometers affords beautiful views of St. Olaf's church, the picturesque valley, the beach, the hills, and several "Swiss-style" charming old houses. A must-see is Balestrand's little beach and the deep, clear pools beside it where I sat for ages soaking up the sound of the water's tranquil lapping on the rocks and watching fish zip around way below the surface of the crystal-clear water. I even caught people swimming and sunning themselves at midday in late September! There were not many dining options post-tourist-season, but I had the soup at the chocolatery called Holmen within the main triangle of town, and though I found it overpriced (compared to prices in Bergen), it was delicious.

Our family absolutely loved staying at Frydenlund near Balestrand. Everything in the property's information was accurate. Great hosts who helped us when we had some questions, Views are wonderful and several areas in which to relax and enjoy them. Check-in was easy as there was a door code. While we would love to return to this part of Norway we would only do so if we could also stay at Frydenlund.

Beautiful location and friendly small town.
Beautiful location and friendly small town. Unfortunately it rained quite heavy in September 2019 when we were there so that we couldn't do much biking and hiking as we had anticipated, but there was still enough to do to keep us occupied the day and a half that we spent there. Dinner with a piano concert in the Kviknes Hotel was particularly memorable.

Cute town with a lot packed into a small place.
Cute town with a lot packed into a small place. Walking around town is easy. There are two grocery stores and plenty of restaurants. We went to an English Mass at St Olaf's Church too. If we had arrived earlier in the day we might have had time to fish from the shores of the fjord.
I wasn't expecting an amazing experience when booking but we loved our night at this hotel. Our room was perfect and had a little patio which was nice. We had a lovely walk around town and then took in the wonderful smorgasbord at the Kviknes Hotel for which we received a discount as the Balestrand Hotel booked the table for us (the food was amazing - especially the dessert!). Top experience was that the "breakfast not included" was actually coffee and croissants which we ate outside, overlooking the fjord. Perfect!
Everything! Balestrand is the most beautiful place. And the view from our comfortable and well equipped little cabin was stunning. Inge, our host, was there to welcome us and was friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. We could not fault our choice of location. The walking is amazing. May is reasonably quiet there, which suited us fine. The weather was incredible. No rain for the entire week. According to Inge, it was the best May he has ever known... he's lived there all his life and he's 69!!!
The views from the rooms (we were in the large non-historic addition) were spectacular - of course it would be nearly impossible to have non-spectacular views in Balestrand. The common rooms were classic old hotel spaces - large, grand, and with magnificent views! The breakfast buffet was excellent. The art gallery - both the space (with the enormous, thick slabs of granite on the walls) and the exhibit (photos by Wilhelm Dreesen) were remarkable! Highly recommended!
I don’t normally leave reviews, but we absolutely loved our stay so we had to! The place is in perfect location, has one of the most amazing views I’ve seen and is very spacious. The owner was very quick to reply, and very accommodating. The kitchen and bathroom have been updated so the current photos don’t do it justice! We were very warm and comfortable and it was nice to catch up on some washing. Highly recommend staying here!
The breakfast was extensive with juices, hot and cold cereals, boiled and scrambled eggs, a variety of breads, meats, and lox, and plenty of wonderful steaming coffee. A true delight!
The gentleman at the front desk was personable, kind, and enthusiastic from the moment he picked us up at the ferry until we said good-bye.I sincerely hope I can go back to the Midtnes Hotel someday!
The staff was pleasant and friendly and gave good recommendations of restaurants in town. The free breakfast was decent and there were also full kitchens for guests to use. The views from the balcony were the best part of staying here! Really lovely view of the fjord. The room was quite clean and had everything we needed. There was ample free parking in a lot by the entrance.
Very spacious, beautiful view, different seating areas (deck, sunroom, living room), very helpful hosts, short drive in to town, better appliances than we have at home! We loved staying at Frydenlund and Balestrand. If we return to this part of Norway again, we would have to stay at Frydenlund.
Although the nearby restaurant was closed, there was a Coop Prix and Joker supermarkets for us to buy our grocerries. Everything was perfect. As per our request, we were given an apartment with a balcony with sea view. In fact, this was the best place we stayed during our 16 days long journey.
I think it is one of the best apartments we have ever stayed. Very spacious with really well thought layout. View of the fjord from large well equipped balcony to spend the evening on. Despite next to harbour absolutely quiet. We only wished we stayed longer as area is phenomenal
The Dragsvik Fjordhotel is a very peaceful place in a peaceful location, not too far from the center of Balestrand. Lots of different sitting areas where you can enjoy the view while reading, playing cards, or conversing with friends.
it is very close to the ferry pier and a few restaurants in town (2 min walk). it’s very spacious and has a nice stocked kitchen and a washing machine. Hot shower, comfy beds, great view - at half the price of hotels - loved it!
Great huge apartment on the waterfront. Our group of 5 adults had plenty of room. We had a large deck overlooking the water. Convenient location to restaurants and the grocery store. I would highly recommend this apartment.
location and the reciprocal discount with the kviknes hotel near by for food. it was nice having a bathtub as well. the co-owner was exceptional with help and friendliness. view was superb
This was a proper hotel with a lift, desk, case stand and everything you would expect. The staff were helpful and the location was good, not far from the harbour.
