We live in Cairns, which is only a 5.5-hour drive away from Townsville. We use the town for quick get aways and shopping not available in Cairns.
Plenty of good places to eat with lots of variety from drive through to quality restaurants.
Getting around is pretty easy if you have Google maps or similar. It's very spread out and there seems to be multiple ways to get to some destinations.

Loved the area with friendly people everywhere.
Loved the area with friendly people everywhere. Went to the Museum which my Great nephew really loved. All hands on. Went to Kirwan Bowling and had a great time with all our extended family.
Also went to the Tavern and had a wonderful meal which didn't cost too much.
Spent time on The Strand at the Waterpark and all the kids had a ball splashing around.

It is a nice city surrounded by some rainforest, farmland and bush. Lots to see and do. I loved the museums. I loved the botanical gardens; the hill overlooking Townsville is five minutes drive away from the hotel and you can drive or walk up it. The esplanade is worth the walk. Lots of places eat and drink along it.

Townsville is a relaxed, growing city with good restaurants in Palmer Street and along the Strand. Easy to get around and always peaceful on the water front. Magnetic Island is a quick ferry ride away.

This is my first time visiting Australia, and hopefully it will not be my last. The staff was amazing, and provided plenty of information about the local area. Townsville is an amazing city, and the location of The Yongala Lodge is centrally located to stores, restaurants, historic military monuments, and of course the beautiful beaches. The room was comfortable and plenty of space. I just wanted to say thanks to the staff for making this visit unforgettable, and I hope I get to return soon.
We were suddenly caught in a 3 day lockdown, so the staff let us extend our stay to the end of lockdown at a slightly cheaper rate than normal. The room had a microwave, plates etc so we were able to cater for ourselves. The room was not serviced but if we wanted clean towels, bags for the kitchen tidy, or anything else, reception was more than happy to provide it. Each room has a balcony overlooking the beach and The Strand so one didn’t feel hemmed in. Would definitely stay here again.
The Strand Motel is the perfect location, right on the Strand and walking distance into town, with Coles right around the corner for any groceries you might need.
The staff were friendly, and while it was a little outdated, it was clean with a comfortable bed and cold air con - just what you need in Townsville!
The kitchette was small, but functional with a fridge/freezer of decent size.
The Cafe offered large servings and wasn't too overpriced for breakfast.
My room is 2 single bed but each bed has good size which is good for big guy (well i am not big) and 2 pillows each. Nothing cooking facilities or microwave, there are refridge & jug, a hotel room which is good enough for short stay. Walk-in bathroom, my window facing empty ground and the city, quiet, clean. I was allowed for early check-in 11.30am 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻. Palmer Street is known for restaurants/cafes and 3-4 stars hotels so it is definitely safe area.
Have stayed in this accommodation before. It is great for a family who want cooking facilities and a bit more space than a hotel would offer. It's in a quiet suburban street, there is an excellent place to get a coffee about 300 metres away. We like to spend time on the strand and it's close by, less than 10 mins drive. Excellent value for money. We are in Townsville regularly and will stay here again.
Pleasant organized place if you're trying to keep it simple while exploring the area. Takes about 30 minutes to arrive at the ferry from nearby bus stop. Going back and forth is easy.
Ferry has weekly passes making Townsville Strand, museum, and the island economical and interesting. It takes a week to see it all and Civic Guesthouse has everything to make that happen.
The central location in Palmer Street was terrific. It was easy walking distance to all of our places of interest including the Queensland Country Bank Stadium for a Cowboys game, The Strand for sightseeing and lunch, and Flinders Street for dinner.
The location of the Oaks is perfect given that we travelled to Townsville to watch the Cowboys versus Broncos game. Its also central to everything else in Townsville including restaurants and cafes and a short walking distance to the Strand.
Brilliant location and great choice for a night's stay before flying out of Townsville. Close to the Magnetic Island Ferry and city centre. Right on the Strand, offering offering lovely walks, heaps of restaurants, bars, gelato and more.
Great 2 bedroom apartment centrally located on the strand. Great ocean view of magnetic island. Superb kitchen and large lounge area. The beds were very comfy. Great pool that is well shaded by trees. Would definitely stay there again.
The hotel is in an excellent location. Range of great restaurants, pubs and eateries on your doorstep. Short walk to the Strand, ferries and town. Spacious room, very comfortable bed, complimentary water bottles, clean and quiet.
The location was fantastic for everything especially as it’s on the Strand which is the nicest area I Townsville.
The view from the room is spectacular
Just amazing place to stay
Beautiful boutique hotel located in the city centre, rooms very clean and modern, great restaurant and bars, staff very attentive and friendly, pool and facilities exceptional.
